What’s In A Name?EVERYTHING!Recent ArticlesYour name can cost you more than you think!By Tim Kahn 06/12/10Can your domain name (your website address or URL) impact your pay-per-click (PPC) advertising? You’ve probably heard that your domain is important when it comes to search engine optimization (SEO) and your natural or organic rankings, but it can affect your pay per click advertising too. There’s a couple of reasons why: Your domain name tells people what you do and what you are about: Consider the following two (made-up) domains: www.BuyBlueWidgets.com or www.BuyBWOnline.com. If you were an ecommerce site that sold blue widgets, which would be the better domain? You probably guessed it, it’s the first one. If someone sees this domain name, they know that they can purchase blue...Catchy NamesBy Tim Kahn 06/10/10There are tons of suggestions on the Internet for ways to come up with a list of catchy business names. Random name generators work well, and they’re free and easy to find online. Brainstorming is fun, though gathering your ideas for catchy names and brands can become consuming, and if you’re not careful it can be a distraction to actually developing your business! Obviously you need a name that is unique and memorable, and you’ll get only one chance to choose it. But there is another consideration as to business names, one that has arisen in the last 10 years or so, and I would contend that it outweighs almost any other definition of what a “good” business name is. Anatomy of a StartupBy Tim Kahn 06/04/10Part I First of all let me say that the majority of small businesses in America have less than 5 employees, have gross receipts of less than 2 million per year, and make a profit to their owners of less than 200k per year. This is the true picture of small business in America. Most small business owners started with less than 5k in cash and utilized credit cards, home equity lines, and loans from family and friends to get started. They are the landscape companies, real estate companies, insurance agencies, print shops, coffee shops, dentists, and a thousand other small businesses that make up over 50% of the employers in this country! They are the most ignored and exploited group of people, and yet are responsible for all that makes this country great!Spend Time Choosing Your KeywordsBy Tim Kahn 06/05/10Google adwords is a great place to start or simply ask yourself... what is my target audience looking for? Don't treat this lightly. It doesn't do any good to bring worthless traffic to your site. If you are selling coffee online, think of what types of searches your potential customers might type into the search box as they look for a coffee supplier. Attorneys... can’t live with ‘em... can’t live without ‘em!By Tim Kahn 06/13/10Everybody has a good lawyer joke. The truth of the matter, however, is that if you show up in court without one, the joke is on you. I learned this the hard way as a 25 year old entrepreneur. My case was a simple “open and shut” case. It was a frivolous lawsuit filed against my new company by some sandbagger looking to make a quick buck off of my success. After 15 minutes of pleading my case, I was sure the judge was on my side. The counsel for the plaintiff, made some ridiculous comments followed by legal jargon and that was it. The court case was over, I lost, and my attorney (me) cost me over $9,000. That comes to roughly $36,000 per hour. Maybe the attorney that had agreed to represent me for $750 wasn’t such a bad deal after all! Growing UpBy Tim Kahn 06/08/10 I remember back in late 1998 when the internet was going to take over the world. I did a lot of stock trading back then (didn't everybody?) and was convinced that the NASDAQ would eventually shut down the NYSE. Technology was where the world was headed. Online sites such as Amazon.com and Ebay.com were going to put "brick and mortar" businesses completely out. Then came 2000 and the technology crash. Suddenly .com's were worthless. The promise of the internet had failed to deliver and it was back to Wal-Mart. What I didn't realize is that every revolution goes through a distinct cycle. It starts with the "Hype" cycle. Typically there is a media frenzy over all of the unbelievable advancements. Everyone talks about how this is going to change the world. email us your articles relating to our site andwe will publish them with links back to you
